DIRECTORATE OF TECHNICAL EDUCATION (DTE)

 

1. Introduction:

 

The Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) is one of the Principal government agencies. It works for human resource development (HRD) of the country in the area of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)

 

The central office of DTE is situated in Shikkha Bhaban, 16 Abdul Gani Road (near the Bangladesh secretariat), at the heart of the capital city, Dhaka.

The DTE was established in 1960 with five technical education institutions. At present this number has reached to 113. Other than these Government owned  technical vocational education institutions, government extended supports to 500 private SSC Vocational schools, 100 Dhakhil Madrasha, 200 HSC Business Management Colleges, 35 basic trade link schools and 300 self supported private skill development training centers of the country.

About five thousand officers, teachers and support staff are working in this Depertment.

 

2. Programmes Offered:

 

DTE provides different types of formal technical and Vocational education and training (TVET) through its institutions spreaded all over the country.

 

a.         Degree Level Programmes

B.Sc. degree program offered in the following technological areas through three degree level colleges under the academic control of the University of Dhaka:

·         Technical Teachers Education

(Offered by Technical Teachers Training College), Tejgaon, Dhaka.

·         Textile Technology

    (Offered by College of textile Technology). Tejgaon, Dhaka.

·         Leather Technology

    (Offered by Bangladesh College of leather Technology). Hazaribug, 

     Dhaka

 

b.         Diploma Level Programmes

Mid level technical education programmes offered in 41 government Polytechnic institutes and 4 specialised institutes under the academic Supervision of Bangladesh Technical Education Board in 28 different technological areas. The technologies offered are:

There are more than 100 Private Polytechnic Institutes offering Diploma in Engineering program mainly in computer and electronics technology.

 

c.      Certificate Level Programmes:

Certificate level Programmes for skill training (Basic Skill, NSS III, NSS II and NSS I) are offered in the following institutions covering more than 30 trade areas.

                            I.    64 Government Technical School & Colleges offering SSC (Vocational) and HSC (Vocational) programme in about 14 different trades.

                          II.    More than 1400 private schools offering SSC (Vocational) courses in 30 different trades.

                       III.    More than 800 intermediate level private Business Management (BM) Colleges offering HSC (BM) courses in five different trades.

                        IV.    Basic Trade school link programmes are offered in 35 govt./non govt. institutes as an optional subject for the students of class IX and X of general schools.

                           V.    300 self supported private training centers offering Para trades.

                        VI.    Institute of glass and Ceramics offering SSC (voc) in glass and Ceramic trades.

(38) Introduction of diploma-in-fashion design and diploma in clothing technology courses in 20 old Polytechnic Institute.

(39) Introduction of Skill Training courses for ultra poor

(42) Introduction of Dakhil (Vocational) courses in existing 500 madrasah.

(43) Introduction of TVET elements in Class VI, VII & VIII of Secondary School curriculum.
